In the past, this suite in Palma de Mallorca was the largest of the rooms and also the one that posed the greatest challenge for us when settling into our apartment.

The old 19th century layout raised some doubts about the use of some of the rooms, but it was absolutely clear that this space had been the main room of the apartment, undoubtedly where the first owners slept. Some elements such as the plaster moldings on the ceiling, very expensive at that time, testified that this was the principal and most important room of the house. The space was and is divided into two rooms joined by a small door. Following our philosophy, it was necessary to carry out a minor renovation in order not to destroy any of the characteristic elements of the space, it was extremely important to retain the history and old beauty of the room and to allow our guests to feel that they were really in a 19th century suite.

Based on this circumstance the first thing we found was the bathroom in which now stands a sumptuous bathtub with lion paws that transports us back to that time when baths, especially after a long journey were a luxury available only to the richest and wealthiest members of society. Next to the bathtub and sharing the limelight is a spacious shower, adapted to current tastes and that the traveler can use both separately or combined with the bathtub to improvise in your own room a small urban spa. The combination of these two alternatives offers a beautiful contrast of past and present. The decoration of the bathroom space with its high wooden friezes, evokes precisely these old facilities that underlie the collective memory that very occasionally cross our travels, allowing us to somehow not only travel in space but also in time.

Palma suites

A suite different from the others

When we started with the renovation and looking at other suites in Palma, we thought about being original and preserving parts of the building’s past and its former owners.

On entering the suite, the main feature is the large and comfortable bed, which occupies a central position. To compliment it further, not only a padded headboard was installed, but the entire wall was transformed into a huge headboard. To create this, two elements were used, on the one hand a wallpaper that evokes a Caribbean landscape, a territory that the first owners of the house knew well since it was there where they had their main business, a cigar factory, whose products they sold throughout Europe and that for generations was the main source of income for the family. To give more relevance to the scene, we decided to place it behind a large window made with the windows rescued from the restoration of the apartment. On both sides of the bed, two small tables made of washed tropical wood appear to come out of the mural itself, as if taking shape and we could touch it. With these two elements and subtle indirect lighting we create an illusion, a trompe l’oeil that allows us to look out from our suite in Palma to the Caribbean where perhaps, why not, could be our next destination. Whilst at the same time we are creating our own small tribute to the family that in the 19th century frequented the two seas, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

To complete this suite in Palma we have created two other environments, on the one hand a living area with a comfortable sofa and a coffee table that allows us to have both a reading area by the window and a comfortable space in which to have breakfast or chat after a day of exploring the delights of Palma. Nowadays, no space for travelers is complete without an area for teleworking, in Suite Flamingo we recognize that functional space needs to be comfortable, for this we have created a high frieze using again elements of the reform in which the dedicated work of the old craftsmen is appreciated and that like everything that is handmade is something unique. In this sense we must mention that if anyone had experience of working whilst traveling then it was the former owners who sailed the seas to provide Palma with tobacco and other then exotic products, thus preserving the original spirit while adapting to new needs, past and present united in a space designed to generate unforgettable memories for our guests.

Beyond the photos we can take, essential to activate our memory, we want the travelers who choose us to remember the sensations, to remember that for one night, for a few hours, they were not only in Palma but they were part of its history, part of the memories of a place that somehow is already a little bit theirs.
